Grand Marais is well known as the beginning point of the Gunflint Trail. It is also a common end point of Minnesota’s North Shore Scenic Drive. Whether you bring the family for a day or longer, you will find a variety of activities and sights to keep everyone happy.
Artist’s Point
One of the most picturesque areas is Artist’s Point. This peninsula in the Grand Marias Harbor is a place painters and photographers fall in love with. The large rock formations on the peninsula provide space for artists to set up their easels and visitors to sit and watch the waves. You and your kids will enjoy exploring the many tide pools. At the end of the breakwater wall, you will find the Grand Marais Lighthouse. Though you cannot enter the lighthouse, you can photograph it.
Enjoy the Local Cuisine
Grand Marias is known for its local fish. Be sure to visit one of the shoreline restaurants. Locally caught fish delight the palate. Some restaurants also serve locally-grown produce as well.
Lake View Natural Dairy
The kids will have fun when you take a trip to this family-owned dairy farm. If your children like farm animals, they will love it here. Cows, chickens, cats on a working farm and fresh dairy products to buy make this trip educational and fun for all.
Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center
Nature lovers and history buffs will enjoy this museum and nature center. The two-room cabin museum provides photos and interpretive storyboards as well as videos chronicling the areas history. Learn about the immigrants that settled here, Native Americans and voyageurs. The Nature Center gives kids the opportunity to learn about wildlife in the area, including frogs and tadpoles.
These are just a few of the interesting features of Grand Marias. Your family will love taking time here to explore and learn about this intriguing area.
