History abounds in the area. Learn about the trail’s importance to prehistoric peoples and Native Americans, the Revolutionary War, the Voyageurs, miners and loggers. The Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center, located on the shore of Saganaga Lake, explains the history while offering family-focused naturalist programs on its 50-acre site.
Today fishermen find lake trout, northern pike, walleye and smallmouth bass in the many lakes. Hundreds of miles of trails invite hikers, cross-country skiers, ATVers and snowmobilers into the woods to look for moose, deer, bears, loons, owls and eagles. Although there are no towns along the trail, there are many resorts, large and small, that offer a variety of lodging experiences and activities. A trip up the Gunflint Trail is the experience of a lifetime.
