Gooseberry Falls State Park

Make good use of your State Parks permit with a trip to Gooseberry Falls State Park. Located along the Lake Superior shoreline, Gooseberry Falls boasts the most picturesque waterfalls in the state. Put your hiking shoes on and enjoy the 2.5 miles of the recently completed Gitchi-Gami State Trail that runs throughout the park. Bicycles are also welcome along the trail, which connects to the lower picnic area and the rest of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail. You can follow it along Highway 61 to the town of Silver Bay. One of the most popular areas along the North Shore, Gooseberry Falls is a preferred spot for avid trout fishing. Stop by the informative visitor center and learn about the area including geology, the local wildlife and history. The center also hosts naturalist programs and has interactive exhibits, restrooms and a gift shop.

Gooseberry Falls Hiking & Biking Trails

Throughout the year, Gooseberry Falls is a place for hiking, bicycling, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. There are 20 miles of hiking trails, 12 miles for cross-country skiers and 2 miles of snowmobile trails. Be sure to bring your camera along, because the trails follow along the Gooseberry River. You will encounter aspen, stands of cedar, spruce and pine forests. Be prepared for breathtaking scenes of nature at its finest in Minnesota.

The Magnificent Gooseberry Falls Waterfalls

There are five magnificent waterfalls located in the park. Three of these amazing falls are created by a rocky gorge where the Gooseberry River runs through on its way to Lake Superior. Take a hike on the trails to get the best view of the falls. If you do not mind getting wet, you may even want to wade in the river where the current is mild for a different vantage point. No matter what time of year you visit, the
falls are always worth the trip.

Grand Marais is well known as the beginning point of the Gunflint Trail. It is also a common end point of Minnesota’s North Shore Scenic Drive. Whether you bring the family for a day or longer, you will find a variety of activities and sights to keep everyone happy.

Artist’s Point

One of the most picturesque areas is Artist’s Point. This peninsula in the Grand Marias Harbor is a place painters and photographers fall in love with. At the end of the breakwater wall, you will find the Grand Marais Lighthouse. Though you cannot enter the lighthouse, you can photograph it.

Learn about the immigrants that settled here, Native Americans and voyageurs. The Nature Center gives kids the opportunity to learn about wildlife in the area, including frogs and tadpoles.

Split Rock Lighthouse:

A Must-See North Shore Attraction on Lake Superior

Take a step back in history when you visit Minnesota’s Split Rock Lighthouse. Completed in July 1910, the historic lighthouse was built after catastrophic shipwrecks occurred in 1905. Shipping season was always a treacherous time for ships on Lake Superior. However, in November of 1905, twenty-nine ships were lost or damaged due to a blizzard on the lake. Four of those occurred near the area where the Split Rock Lighthouse now stands.

Split Rock Lighthouse is located on the North Shore of Lake Superior southwest of Silver Bay. It continues to be one of Minnesota’s most photographed landmarks. Designed by lighthouse engineer Ralph Russell Tinkham, the lighthouse was active from 1910 until 1969.

Enjoy Far More Than the Incredible Views

Not only will you enjoy the breathtaking vistas from the site, but you will also have an opportunity to explore the center’s displays and exhibits. Watch the video presentations for detailed insights into the creation of the lighthouse. You can also tour the lighthouse keeper’s home and outbuildings to get a feel for what it was like to live there. Climb the 32 steps to the top of the lighthouse for a commanding view of Lake Superior.

Enjoy Split Rock Lighthouse State Park while you are there. Separate from the lighthouse, the state park includes the land surrounding the historic Split Rock Lighthouse.
