Located in Northeastern Minnesota on the historic Iron Range, the Mesabi Trail stretches for over 135 miles from Grand Rapid all the way up to the Boundary Waters & Ely, MN. While parts of the trail are still under construction most of the trail has been paved and ready for you to explore. The trail travels past many lakes, rivers, creeks, old mine dumps and offers many great views of the Iron Range and Northern Minnesota. The trail rests on top of many old railroad beds, logging & mining roads that once connected the early Iron Range economy.

The trail has over 22 access points spread throughout the Iron Range with each city along the trail having a parking and trail access point. A wheel pass is needed for anyone over 18 years of age to bike the trail, while foot travel is free for all, you can purchase your wheel pass online from the Mesabi Trail Shop. You can also purchase wheel passes locally at Bikes on Howard in Hibbing, Itasca Trail Sports in Grand Rapids & Mesabi Recreation in Virginia. There are self pay boxes where you can get a 3 day pass in Grand Rapids, Bovey, Calumet, Keewatin, Hibbing, Buhl, Mountain Iron, Virginia, Eveleth, Giants Ridge (near Biwabik) entry point kiosks.

During the spring, summer & fall the trail is open to hiking, biking, inline skating and any other form of non-motorized travel. During the winter months many sections of the trail are open to snowmobiles and connect to Minnesota’s Snowmobile Trail System.

In Minnesota we know snow and we know outdoor recreation! We have one of the most extensive and well maintained trail systems in the USA with over 22,000 miles of groomed trails. These trails are maintained by local snowmobile club volunteers who dedicate a lot of time and effort to keep the trail open and in great shape. A state snowmobile trail sticker is required for all user of the trail system, you can get your sticker from the MN DNR.

Each area of Minnesota has unique terrain and features that set it apart from others, explore the lakes, rivers, swamp, ridges and endless wilderness Minnesota has to offer. Snowfall can vary from year to year but you will usually find deep snow by late November, check out the MN DNR snow conditions & depth map before planning your trip.
